Nutanix and Google Cloud Expand Partnership Delivering Apps and Desktops as a Service

· 2 min read

Google Cloud and Nutanix have been working together for several years to enable the best possible user experience for apps and desktops that are streamed from the cloud. Nutanix Xi Frame integrates directly with Chrome Browser, Chrome OS, Google Drive, Sign in with Google, and Google Cloud Platform (GCP). And now, beyond the technical integrations, both of our customer-facing organizations are collaborating closely to work with our joint customers to enable their desktop and application virtualization initiatives.

As part of an expansion of our partnership this summer, Nutanix will partner with Google Cloud to help address the surge in demand for work-from-home solutions with cloud-based delivery of desktops and apps with Xi Frame.

Addressing New Challenges in Education with Frame

Over the last decade, technology has been completely transforming education and the learning experience, from K-12 to higher ed. Nationwide, school systems have worked toward digitally transforming the learning experience with initiatives for 1:1 student-to-computer coverage. Prior to the current global pandemic, 1:1 efforts prioritized access to computing and technology within the school. But now, access to computing from home is front-and-center, since it has practically become the only way to connect to teachers and learning when school buildings are closed.

Future of Work: VDI and DaaS Will be Critical

For many of us, the future of work has changed. While it’s impossible to predict the steady state outcome, it’s already clear working remotely will play an important role going forward. As we extend our enterprise beyond the traditional confines of physical location, some interesting decisions are presented.

What is top of mind for organizations of all sizes as we move forward? The recent scramble to implement or expand work-from-anywhere solutions has caused many to give End User Computing (EUC) technologies a second or third look.

Frame Storage Options Explained!

There are several key storage questions to consider when thinking about implementing DaaS. Where do you store your data? How do your applications access your files and folders? What is your experience like when your data and applications are not close to each other? How do you handle Windows User profiles in your non-persistent virtual desktop or application environment? How do you access data from your local device from your Frame-powered virtual desktop and application environment? After reading this blog, you'll have answers to these crucial storage questions.

Most of us use a variety of file storage solutions -- that is the reality in a modern workspace.

On a daily basis I am using Apple iCloud, DropBox, Microsoft OneDrive, Google Drive, Synology, Nutanix Files, Windows File Server, Azure Files, and some persistent desktops to store and use my data.

  • What does a day in the life of an end user working in Frame look like?
  • What tasks does a Frame administrator do on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis to support 100s or 1000s of users?
  • What is a Super Admin and how does this “Super Woman” or “Super Man” manage Frame tenants across the globe?
  • What are the Customer, Organization and Account entities in a multi-tenant setup?
  • How does one connect a cloud subscription and how can one analyze usage?

These and many more great questions will be answered in three training videos - as easy as 1-2-3!

Desktop as a Service on 4 Different Cloud Platforms in 3 Minutes

Frame started out during the early days of cloud computing, learning to adapt to rapid changes and building features to meet the needs of our many unique customers. We weren't just built during early public cloud development, Frame was built on the public cloud and has always taken an agile development and delivery approach -- anticipating customer demands and acting quickly to provide new solutions using the latest technology innovations.

Since Frame was acquired by Nutanix in August of 2018, we've continued to make some impressive changes to our Desktop as a Service (DaaS) platform. Customers now have the option to choose from 3 major players in public cloud: AWS, Microsoft Azure, and (more recently) Google Cloud Platform. They can also run virtual applications and desktops powered by Frame in their own private cloud, on-premises with Nutanix AHV.

One part of our collective shared experience of the last few weeks has been watching as one event after the other has been cancelled. Massive trade shows, conferences and events that have been running continuously for decades were all of a sudden… gone. HIMSS, NAB, SXSW, Google Next, Facebook F8, Adobe Summit, Apple WWDC, the Olympics...the list goes on and on. This left attendees, event planners, marketers, and companies with a huge void and the big question: what do we do now?

What makes Nutanix Frame different than Amazon, Citrix, Microsoft, and VMware DaaS solutions?

In this blog series, I've discussed the pros and cons of VDI and DaaS, providing some guidelines to help you make smarter choices. If you've read the previous blog posts, you probably have a pretty good idea what your EUC goals are, what obstacles you face, and how to be successful with DaaS. This time I want to talk about Nutanix Frame, our innovative DaaS platform, and explain what makes Frame unique compared to other DaaS solutions such as Amazon Workspaces, Citrix Cloud, Microsoft WVD (Windows Virtual Desktop), and VMware Horizon Cloud.

I've often said, “We live in a world where everybody is working together and at the same time everybody is competing. This is the new normal.” Finding the balance between competition and partnership is healthy. It keeps Nutanix sharp and helps us to deliver value for customers now and in the future.
